Have questions about our materials or services? Here are some of the most common questions customers ask us. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to give us a call – we’re always happy to provide answers and information!
North Alabama Rock & Dirt proudly serves all of North Alabama. Our primary service area covers communities from the Shoals (Florence/Muscle Shoals) to Huntsville, Madison, Decatur, Athens, and everything in between. If you're in North Alabama, we can likely deliver to you. We also extend into some nearby areas – for example, southern Middle Tennessee (Fayetteville and surrounding areas) – on a case-by-case basis. If you're unsure whether we deliver to your location, just ask! Our goal is to be as accommodating as possible for customers throughout the region.
Yes! Delivery is a core part of our business. We have a fleet of trucks ready to bring your order straight to your home or job site. We deliver Monday through Saturday, and in many cases we can offer same-day delivery if you place your order early in the day. Any delivery fee depends on the distance and the size of the load. We keep our delivery charges fair and competitive – often we offer free delivery within certain local areas or for larger orders. When you request a quote, we'll let you know the delivery cost upfront (if any). There are no hidden fees; you'll know exactly what to expect.
We strive to be flexible. For most orders, 24-48 hours notice is plenty of time for us to schedule your delivery. In fact, we often have same-day or next-day availability. During very busy times (like peak landscaping season in spring), calling a few days in advance is helpful to ensure you get your preferred delivery slot. If you have an urgent need, let us know – we'll do our best to accommodate you even on short notice.
Absolutely! Helping customers plan their projects is part of our friendly service. If you provide us some basic information – for example, the dimensions of the area you're covering and how deep you want the material – we can calculate an approximate quantity for you. We also have easy-to-use material calculators (for rectangles, circles, etc.) that we can walk you through. If needed, we can even schedule a quick site visit to evaluate large projects. Our goal is to make sure you order the right amount: enough to finish the job, but not so much that you overspend. Just ask, and we'll be happy to help crunch the numbers!
In most cases, yes. Our delivery drivers are very skilled at placing materials where you need them. When you place your order, we'll ask you about the drop location (for example: "end of the driveway," "backyard by the fence," etc.). If it's safely accessible, our driver will back the truck up and dump or spread the material right there. However, there are some limitations: low overhead power lines, soft or wet ground, steep grades, or tight spaces can prevent us from reaching certain spots. If our driver determines that it's not safe to dump exactly where requested, we will consult with you on an alternate location (usually somewhere close by and accessible). Protecting your property is important to us, so we won't take unnecessary risks that could cause damage. Rest assured, we'll get your materials as close as possible to where you want them.
You do not have to come in person to order (though you're welcome to visit us!). Most of our customers arrange everything over the phone or online. If you already know what you want, you can call us to schedule a delivery and pay over the phone. We can also coordinate via email or our website contact form if that's more convenient. The only time we suggest coming in person is if you want to see the material before buying – for example, some folks like to look at the color/size of our rocks or the texture of the topsoil. In that case, we welcome you to visit our yard to inspect the materials. Keep in mind that natural products can vary (rocks can have different colors, etc.), and we cannot accept returns on delivered bulk materials, so it's a good idea to be sure of your selection. But if you're already certain of what you need, a quick call is all it takes to place an order and set up delivery.
The best material for a driveway base in our area is usually crusher run (crushed limestone) because it compacts into a stable, solid layer. Many of our customers start with crusher run for the bottom layer and then top it with a finer gravel or limestone (#57 stones are a common top layer for a neat finish). However, the ideal choice can depend on your specific situation – for example, chert can also work well for a solid base if available, and some prefer a top dressing of pea gravel for a more decorative look. If it's a brand new driveway, you'll likely need a thicker base; for reconditioning an existing driveway, sometimes just a fresh layer of gravel is enough. We're happy to discuss your driveway project and recommend the right materials based on the soil conditions and usage of your drive.
Fill dirt and topsoil serve different purposes. Fill dirt is taken from deeper beneath the ground surface – it's mostly clay and subsoil with little to no organic matter. This makes fill dirt great for building up ground, filling holes, or leveling low areas, because it's stable and won't settle much over time (since it lacks decomposable material). Topsoil, on the other hand, is the upper layer of soil that's rich in organic material and nutrients. Topsoil is dark, loose, and excellent for growing plants. You'd use topsoil when you want to support plant life – for example, when preparing a garden bed, filling planters, or adding a layer of quality soil before seeding or laying sod. In summary: use fill dirt for structural fill and topsoil for anything that you want to plant grass or flowers in. Often, a project will use fill dirt to shape or grade an area, then add a few inches of topsoil on top to restore a fertile layer for landscaping.
As a rule of thumb, one ton of gravel will cover about 80 to 100 square feet at a depth of 2 inches. Coverage can vary a bit based on the size of the gravel and how precisely it's spread, but 100 sq. ft. (a 10 ft x 10 ft area) at 2" deep is a good estimate. If you need a thicker layer or are using larger stones, the coverage area will be a bit less. We can help you calculate exactly how many tons you'll need once you know the square footage of your project area. Remember, it's often better to have a little too much than not enough – you don't want to run short in the middle of a project. We can always help you figure out the right amount so you get just what you need.
